Jane Birkin sings Serge Gainsbourg via Japan!

To mark the 20th anniversary of the death of Serge Gainsbourg in March 2011, Jane Birkin was wondering how to put a new spin on performing his songs on stage.

“I had explored every avenue from Serge Gainsbourg pop to Arabesque, accompanied by a classical quartet, 14 or 6 musicians, a harp, a drum machine, violins – everything… ”

Devastated by the Fukushima disaster, she decided to offer the Japanese people a practically improvised concert.

The Japanese people then offered her some of the best Japanese musicians – and it all came together! She decided to perform with them on this new tour dedicated to Gainsbourg.

Jane Birkin et Serge Gainsbourg

It was because of the cinema that Jane Birkin came to France in 1966 to rehearse for a film opposite a certain Serge Gainsbourg. Thus began one of the world’s great love stories played out through French songs.

Together they recorded provocative duets (Je t’aime moi non plus, 69 Année érotique) and Jane produced a number of solo albums (Di Doo Dah, Ex-fan des Sixties and Baby alone in Babylone), the public having been seduced by her breathy, slightly high-pitched voice and her irresistible English accent.

After Serge died in 1991, her fans had to wait seven years to hear Jane Birkin’s new hits in her album “À la légère”. In 2002, she brought Gainsbourg’s songs which were “Algerian, Andalusian, Jewish and Gypsy all at the same time” into the Arabesque show which toured the world.

In 2008, she wrote her first lyrics for the album “Enfants d’hiver” about her life and her activist work, particularly for the release of Burmese political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi.
