The competition consists of 18 timed special stages, and is reaffirming its wish to reconnect with the fundamental values that have made the Monte-Carlo Rally such a legendary event.
It all began in 1911, when rivalry was at its peak between the two famous seaside resort towns of Nice and Monaco.
The first town organised a “Carnival” that attracted a wealthier clientèle in its casinos. Monaco thus decided to organise a meeting for cars in the same spirit as the famous Italian convegni ciclisti with starting points in different European cities and all roads heading for Monaco.
This meeting was scheduled to take place in January to show that the weather in the Principality at that time of year was exceptionally mild. Two men are considered today the “founders” of this rally: Gabriel Vialon and Antony Noghes.
The Monte-Carlo SBM Resort financed the operation. The first year, only twenty-three competitors signed up for the challenge. The following year, this number had quadrupled: the Monte-Carlo Rally had officially been launched!
Valence will once again be the hub of the Monegasque event with special stages close by, enabling a return to the service park between two trips. Participants will compete in thirteen special stages in Ardèche, Haute Loire and Drôme before arriving in Monaco for five other special stages in the Alpes Maritimes department.
Finally, 465 km of timed stages still separate the winner from the final podium at the Place du Palais at 11 am on Sunday 20 January 2013.
Sébastien Loeb and his loyal co-pilot, the Monegasque Daniel Elena, will be at the opening round of the World Rally Championship. The RAMC will be one of the three or four stages on the 2013 programme for this famous duo. In order to win a world title, they need to win the second stage of the day on Friday 18 January, the Saint-Nazaire le Désert / La Motte Chalancon route, which has never been used by the stage.
There will surely be many people in the audience on the routes of the stages and in the parks, trying to get a peek at the team having won the most World Rally Championships since its creation in 1973.
